Could Active honey help ward off coughs & colds

Adding active, healing honey such as Necta & Hive’s Red Gum or Jarrah honey to our armoury could help protect us from nasty colds and flu viruses.

Necta & Hive Jarrah and Red Gum honeys are:

  • 100% unpasteurised, monofloral (single flower) honey
  • Naturally antimicrobial – 3-5 times more potent than Manuka honey
  • Produced by bees foraging on sustainable eucalyptus trees in Western Australia
  • Available online, from selected Boots stores and from Amazon

Not all honey is created equal

Unpasteurised honey is naturally antimicrobial and is measured by its Total Activity, or TA. Necta & Hive honeys have among the highest TA rating of all honey on the market.

Cheaper supermarket honeys do not have the same antimicrobial potency as active, healing honeys. High TA honeys contain natural enzymes that have antimicrobial properties. In Jarrah and Red Gum honey, this enzyme is glucose oxidase which is added to the honey by bees.

Glucose oxidase reacts with the glucose and water in honey to produce hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide from honey is gentle on the gut but effective against cold and flu viruses.

This is different to Manuka honey, which contains methylglyoxal (MGO) which provides a similar active property, but studies show this isn’t as powerful as Jarrah honey at helping to manage infections.

Based on advice from Public Health England (PHE) and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (Nice), doctors already advise patients over one year old to use honey as a first line treatment for coughs and upper respiratory tract infections, rather than antibiotics.

Shamus Ogilvy, the Honey Guru and owner of Necta & Hive and with more than 13 years’ experience in the honey industry says,

“With the world watching the progress of the viruses with trepidation and fear, we need to be doing all we can to protect ourselves from viruses and look after our immune system. Getting a cold or flu can weaken the immune system making us more susceptible to other viruses. As well as following the advice to wash our hands, use hand sanitiser and immediately throw away used tissues, we could all be eating 2-3 teaspoons of active, healing honeys such as those from Necta & Hive to help ward off colds and flu.”
