When society talks about health and wellness, it’s usually geared towards women’s health. Perhaps society is still hanging onto the old fashioned view that all men need to do is eat meat and supress their feelings in order to be fit, healthy, strong and ‘manly’.
Here at Necta & Hive, we’re all inclusive and embrace the health and wellness of all genders. So, in the spirit of keeping things even, here’s an article dedicated to honey and the impact it can have on a man’s health and wellbeing.
Honey for Improved Athletic Performance
Not solely the preserve of men, but worthy of a mention here, athletic performance is an important factor in both professional sportspeople and serious but amateur sportspeople alike.
Studies have linked the regular consumption of honey with improved performance and muscle rejuvenation afterwards. So much so, that honey is now often recommended in place of glucose in sports drinks. It’s thought these benefits stem from the fact that honey is higher in fructose than glucose. Fructose is released into the bloodstream slower than glucose and therefore produces a more sustained, slow burning source of fuel keeping a sportsperson going for longer. Make taking honey a part of your daily exercise routine (as you do with warming up). Take either a small spoonful of our Necta & Hive 30+ TA honeycomb or alternatively a spoonful of out Necta & Hive Jarrah 22+ prior to exercise.
Honey for Passion?!
Yep, and our ancient ancestors knew all about it. In ancient Persia, it was customary for newly married couples to drink an alcoholic honey drink (like a fortified wine) called mead for the first month. Presumably hence the name honeymoon! It was believed to increase their libido, so that children weren’t far away.
They were definitely onto something, as honey is a good source of the B vitamins. The B vitamins are thought to be important in the production of testosterone, the more testosterone, the more libido a man has, increasing his chances of becoming a father!
Honey for Glowing Skin
Because men want good skin too! Honey contains fruit acids called alpha hydroxy acids, or AHAs. AHAs have a natural exfoliating effect on the skin, helping to clear the pores of skin dulling dead skin cells, excess oil and dirt. Mixed with a few drops of water and made into a paste, Necta & Hive Red Gum 10+ TA honey can be applied as a skin brightening, toning face mask. Leave on for up to half an hour whilst you relax, rinse off, pat dry and apply your usual moisturiser.
The proven antibacterial properties of active, healing honey also helps to manage problem skin complaints linked with an increased level of natural skin bacteria such as acne. Using honey neat, dabbed onto spots or problem areas using a clean cotton bud is an effective way of treated problem skin.
So there we have it, just three reasons why a daily teaspoon of honey can benefits men’s health. To keep up to date with all the other amazing health benefits of unpasteurised honey, make sure you subscribe to the Necta & Hive newsletter or follow us on social media.
