Using Honey As An Effective Face Mask

Using Honey As An Effective Face Mask

We talk a lot here at Necta & Hive about the amazing health benefits of active, healing honey. For example, honey helps to support the health of the immune system and the gut microbiome and helps manage the symptoms of the menopause

But this wonderful, natural substance also has healing properties when used outside of the body. Used as a face mask, honey is extremely beneficial for the skin. Here’s how you can use honey as a healing, nourishing mask.

The Skin Health Benefits of Honey

Active, healing honey has been proven in numerous, robust scientific studies, to contain antimicrobial properties. (Note that we mention active, healing honey, as not all honey is equal – cheaper, supermarket honey in squeezy bottles has usually been blended or processed in such a way that destroys this natural antimicrobial activity.)

In terms of the skin, this is good news, especially if you have problem skin. Necta & Hive Jarrah 22+ TA honey is ideal for soothing problem skin conditions such as acne, eczema or psoriasis.

Often, these skin conditions are exacerbated by the presence of bacteria on the skin. Using superior, unpasteurised honey such as ours can help balance the bacteria on the skin, helping angry, inflamed skin conditions to calm and become less irritated.

Honey is also an excellent, naturally gentle exfoliator. But it’s smooth and runny, we hear you cry! Correct, but exfoliants don’t have to contain physical, harsh components that mechanically exfoliate the skin. Honey contains natural fruit acids called alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which are effective exfoliants. They work by ridding the pores of dead skin cells and other cellular debris, excess sebum (oil) and dirt. Leaving behind, glowing, smooth skin without a harsh mechanical exfoliant in sight!

Using honey on the skin results in brighter, clearer skin but not only that. The AHAs in honey can also help to boost collagen and elastin, the proteins in our skin responsible for keeping it taut and wrinkle free.

Applying a Honey Face Mask

For a nourishing mask, mix two teaspoons of Necta & Hive Marri Wild honeycomb 15+ TA  (this honey has a thicker consistency) or Jarrah 22+ TA honey (for the ultimate glow) with a few drops of warm (not hot) water to make it easier to spread. Then smooth it over your cleansed face using your fingertips or a clean spatula. Leave for up to 30 minutes whilst you relax with a herbal tea before rinsing off. Pat dry with a soft, clean towel and apply your regular moisturiser.

If you have very dry skin, add one or two drops of Argan or rosehip oil to your honey mix before applying. Kaolin clay also works well mixed in with honey to help sooth excessively oily skin.

Could the skin wonder product you’ve been looking for be in your home already? Honey could be the answer you’re looking for and a perfect addition to a natural skincare routine. Try a honey face mask tonight and see what difference it can make to your skin!
