For too long, the health, wellness and beauty industry has focussed mainly on the needs of female bodies, with perhaps a little put aside for male bodies. For generations, beauty products have promised glowing skin, silky hair and fewer visible signs of ageing – all geared towards both the female body and the female mind.
But now, in the 21st Century, it’s more than perfectly acceptable for males to use products designed to enhance their skin and appearance, and to attend beauty appointments. It’s no longer just about going to the gym and being ‘manly’ for the modern man, it’s about grooming and looking and feeling good.
That’s why at Necta & Hive we celebrate the virtues of our high quality honey as not just a wellness product, but a beauty product too – for all genders!
So here’s an article dedicated to the benefits of honey for men’s health, wellbeing and beauty.
Honey for Men’s Skin
Male skin tends to be thicker than female skin. This is down to the presence of the male sex hormone testosterone being present generally in male bodies to a considerably higher extent than female bodies. The presence of testosterone also tends to make male skin oiler than female skin, with larger pores.
The pores of the skin produce sebum; the larger the pores, and the higher the testosterone levels, the more sebum is produced. Sebum is the wax-like substance produced by the skin to protect it from the elements – but an overproduction can lead to shiny, greasy skin, blocked pores and spots.
Exfoliating is one of the best ways of keeping the pores clear and the skin happy and spot-free. But that doesn’t mean harsh mechanical exfoliants such as scrubs and facial brushes. Honey contains fruit acids called AHAs or alpha hydroxy acids that have a natural exfoliating effect on the skin. They help to clear the pores, preventing a build-up of dead skin cells, bacteria and dirt being trapped by excess oil, thereby preventing spots.
Mix a teaspoon of Necta & Hive Marri Wild Honeycomb 15+ TA honey (including the comb) with a few drops of water and apply a thin layer to the face. Relax for up to half an hour and rinse with warm water before patting dry.
Honey for Energy and Stamina
You may have noticed that honey has replaced the glucose in your energy drink – and for good reason. Honey is richer in fructose than glucose, and fructose is released into the bloodstream more slowly than glucose. This means that it energises us for longer, such as during a run or gym session, sustaining longer, harder, more beneficial workouts.
Add a heaped teaspoon of our Necta & Hive Marri Wild Honeycomb 15+ TA honey (again, including the comb) to your pre-workout smoothie and see how it benefits you.
Stamina isn’t only needed in the gym – many of us look for increased stamina elsewhere, such as in the bedroom. Honey has been used as an aphrodisiac for millennia in certain cultures – newly married men would be encouraged to drink milk and honey on their wedding night.
But it’s not all heresy – studies have backed this up, with one, in 2021, concluding, “Overall, the bioactive components of honeybee products, when wisely used, can provide a natural approach for improving the reproductive performance and health of mammals”. So don’t just take our word for it, take the word of the scientists!
